Palliative and Elder Care Resources in Mumbai: Where Families Can Turn
You Don’t Have to Find This Alone
One of the hardest parts of a new diagnosis is simply not knowing where to start looking for help. This is a starting list of organisations and resources serving Mumbai families — not exhaustive, but a real place to begin.
Which Palliative Care Organisations Serve Mumbai Families?
Last verified: 24 July 2026. Organisation details can change — please confirm directly before relying on any contact information below.
- Pallium India — training, advocacy, and family support across India, including volunteer-run community networks in Maharashtra.
- PalCare Mumbai (Jimmy S Bilimoria Foundation) — home-based palliative care for patients across Mumbai, at no cost to families.
- Romilla Care — palliative and home-care support based in Bandra, serving families across the city.
How Do You Get Started?
Most organisations accept referrals directly from families, not just hospitals — a phone call explaining your situation is usually enough to begin. Many will ask about the patient’s current diagnosis, treating hospital, and immediate needs.
What Should You Have Ready When You Call?
- Current diagnosis and treating hospital/doctor’s name
- Whether the patient is currently on any equipment (oxygen, catheters, etc.)
- Immediate concerns — pain, mobility, emotional distress
- Who in the family is the primary point of contact
Are There Government or Subsidized Options?
Maharashtra has palliative care provisions through some government hospitals, though availability and quality vary significantly by location — it’s worth asking your treating hospital directly whether they have a palliative care department or can refer you to one.
What About Cost?
Many of the organisations above provide care at no or minimal cost, funded through donations and foundations. Don’t assume cost alone should stop you from calling — ask directly what’s available.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a doctor's referral to contact these organisations?
No. Most accept calls directly from families — you don't need a hospital referral to start the conversation.
Is care from these organisations only for cancer patients?
No. Palliative and elder care organisations generally support any serious illness or age-related need, not cancer alone.
What if I'm not sure which organisation is right for us?
Any of them can point you in the right direction even if they can't help directly — starting with one call is better than waiting until you're sure.

A Note From Amardeep
I trained as a palliative care volunteer through Pallium India’s Volunteer Training Programme, and this blog exists to share what I’ve learned in plain language — because I remember how confusing and frightening these terms were before someone explained them to me clearly. I’m not currently offering clinical services; this is an educational space for families navigating serious illness in Mumbai and beyond.
